▉ IEC 62684 Universal Smartphone Charger Standard
Facing the strong upsurge in the Smartphone market, having a uniform techinical standard can be the key to link and strengthen the whole ecosystem. With such demand, IEC 62684, IEC 60950-1 and EN 301 489-34(*) therefore become the emerging mobile phone standards. Among these three standards, IEC 62684 is the one to define the mobile phone charger specification.
The IEC 62684 allows consumers to use a single one-fits-all charger with all new Smartphones. This standard is already endorsed by a significant number of IT giants. As of 2011, fourteen mobile phone manufacturers and technology providers have signed the MoU with European Union to support IEC 62684 standard: Apple, Nokia, Research in Motion, Emblaze Mobile, Huawei Technologies, LGE, Motorola Mobility, NEC, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, TCT Mobile (ALCATEL), Texas Instruments and Atmel. Their common goal is to drive the industry forward.
(* IEC 60950-1 is for Safety and EN 301 489-34 is for EMC-Low Radiation, these two standards and IEC 62684 are all mandatory for adaptors seeking for standard compliance. Vendors can apply all of these three standards through Allion)
About IEC 62684
The IEC 62684, an International Electrotechnical Commission Standard, is designed to universalize today’s countless charger interfaces. IEC 62684 is first developed as an interoperability specifications (EU 62684:2010) of the common External Power Supply (EPS) across Europe, and it has now become an international standards (IEC 62684:2011) for universal chargers of data-enabled mobile phones.
IEC 62684 covers all aspects of the charger, connector and plug, as well as safety, interoperability and environmental considerations. It is expected to be apply on other devices with similar charging requirement such as digital cameras, games consoles and tablet PCs.

About IEC 62684 Compliance Testing
IEC 62684 Compliance Testing is the way to ensure that the adaptor (or so-called charger) for mobile phone is complied with the IEC 62684 standard. To by compliance with IEC 62684 , the device must be able to meet USB-IF connector test requirement, USB Micro-B cables and connectors specification, all electrical specifications, required voltage rate/ current/ frequency, and EPS/ Reliability requirement. In Allion, we can conduct all of the testing and help to ensure your product is conform to the standard and get certified.
- EPS detection
- AC Input characteristic
- DC output characteristic
- DC plug connector specification
Extensions Related Tests
The IEC 62684 standard is designed for mobile phone ecosystem linkage. As a result, a set of standard testing or confirmation should be done along with IEC 62684 to ensure the device can be workable. Through Allion, you can now have them in once with our quality commitment.
