● Directive (EU) 2022/2380 of European Parliament and the Council

● European Union USB-C® / USB PD Mandatory Requirements Approaching Fast

  • The European Commission published Directive (EU) 2022/2380, defining the requirements of the “common charging” solution that requires USB Type-C® and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) as the charging standard for portable devices (e.g. mobile phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, etc.). It will come into effect by the end of 2024.
  • USB-IF Certification can be a valuable tool as your company looks to have its products comply with the appropriate IEC 62680 specifications and European requirements.

● The European Commission updating the references to technical specifications for ‘common charging’.

  • Part I of Annex Ia to Directive 2014/53/EU is amended as follows:
  • »in point 2.1, the reference to standard ‘EN IEC 62680-1-3:2021’ is replaced by ‘EN IEC 62680-1-3:2022’;
  • »in point 2.2, the reference to standard ‘EN IEC 62680-1-3:2021’ is replaced by ‘EN IEC 62680-1-3:2022’;
  • »in point 3.1, the reference to standard ‘EN IEC 62680-1-2:2021’ is replaced by ‘EN IEC 62680-1-2:2022’.

  • Removed requirement for 7.5W of reserved power for all ports

● SPR Mode AVS Added to New Release

  • Required for ALL SPR Sources >27W
  • »Voltage Ranges
    –9-15V for SPR Sources up to 45W
    –9-20V for SPR Sources 45W and up
  • »SPR AVS voltage range 9V to 20V, adjustable in 100mV increments
  • »No Current Limit
  • Optional fixed voltages
  • »Only allowed <9V
  • »SPR AVS eliminates the need for optional voltages >9V so they are NO longer allowed

● USB Power Delivery Version Control

  • Current certifying USB PD 3.1 v1.2 to USB PD 3.2 v1.0
  • Minimum PPS voltage must be 3.3V for USB PD 3.1 versions 1.7 and older
  • Minimum PPS voltage must be 5V for USB PD 3.1 v1.8 and newer

● If an E-Marker is presented in a cable form factor, instead of a paddle card form factor, then the E-Marker must be tested against the QuadraMAX test equipment to perform the End Product Cable Test Plan

  • Testing is for informational purposes only, however, is required

● USB Type-C Liquid Corrosion Detection

  • Appendix A
  • »Audio Adapter Accessory mode (Ra/Ra) – deprecated
  • »Replaced by Liquid Corrosion Detection mode
  • Allows use of Ra/Ra for detection of potentially harmful liquid in the receptacle
