Consultant’s Insight
In the in-vehicle intelligent voice assistant ecosystem, the accuracy of voice commands directly affects driver concentration and road safety. Therefore, the voice recognition rate is an essential metric that every manufacturer must carefully evaluate. Among the many factors that influence recognition accuracy, background noise remains one of the most challenging!
In this article, we introduce the Allion Voice Test Platform (AVTP) and show how Allion’s acoustic consulting team simulates a variety of real-world noise environments to help clients precisely verify the voice recognition performance of their IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) systems

Can Your Voice Assistant Really Understand You? The technical challenge of driving environments
Most in-car entertainment and navigation systems on the market proudly claim to “understand your voice” and “respond instantly.” Yet in real driving conditions, the reality often falls short of the marketing promises. Changes in the driving environment frequently cause potential issues where voice commands cannot be recognized accurately.
Allion Voice Test Platform: The Optimal Verification Environment for 100% Accuracy
To help manufacturers accurately understand the performance of their products, Allion has developed AVTP (Allion Voice Test Platform). This solution enables manufacturers to evaluate how well their IVI systems can recognize voice commands under varying driving speeds and background noise levels.
Through the AVTP test platform, we simulate the following variable scenarios:
- Simulate in-car background noise generated at different driving speeds. (ETSI ES 202 396-1 recommends testing at vehicle speeds of 0 / 80 / 100 / 130 km/h.)
- Set up various voice-command flows (such as starting navigation or playing music) to verify recognition rates.
- Conduct tests with human voice interference (e.g., conversation from the passenger seat).
During the actual testing process, AVTP not only plays both the test speech and the background noise, but also executes multiple rounds of testing quickly and repeatedly. By averaging multiple test runs, we ensure objective and stable results with high reference value.
Test Data and Evaluation Results
Test 1: IVI Voice Recognition Performance at Different Driving Speeds

Results: The ECNR (Echo Cancellation and Noise Reduction) technology maintained a stable recognition rate of 91% in noise environments below approximately 80 km/h. However, as driving speed increased and noise levels rose, the effect of ECNR gradually diminished, causing recognition rates to drop to 82% at 100 km/h (-9.9%) and 76% at 130 km/h (-16.5%).
This test successfully quantified the effectiveness of ECNR technology under different speed-related noise levels and provided clear guidance for future algorithm optimization and parameter tuning.
Test 2: IVI Voice Recognition Performance with Human Speech Interference

In a further experiment focusing on ECNR functionality, we introduced human speech interference on top of the 80 km/h driving noise environment. The results showed that the IVI system’s recognition rate dropped sharply from 91% to 53% (-41.8%).
This demonstrates that human voice interference significantly impacts IVI voice recognition accuracy.
Since ECNR technology struggles to distinguish between control commands and interfering speech, Allion’s experts recommend enhancing microphone directivity or adopting beamforming technology to improve the recognition of control commands.
